Top Ten Restaurants in Iowa
9 of the 10 are pinned on the map above. Neither OpenStreetMap nor Wikidata carries a location for Cobble Hill, so it is listed below but not pinned — a missing pin is left missing rather than guessed at. Each row also links straight to its own location in Google Maps.
The MICHELIN Guide does not yet publish a selection covering Iowa, so this list leads with James Beard Foundation recognition.

Why these ten
MICHELIN has never covered Iowa and has not announced a selection that would, so the list runs entirely on James Beard recognition and on institutions documented well enough to stand on their own.
Iowa still has no Best Chef: Midwest winner. The state shares that region with Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, and no Iowa restaurant has taken Outstanding Restaurant, Outstanding Chef or Best New Restaurant either. The state's win column is therefore two America's Classics: Breitbach's Country Dining, serving in Balltown since the 1850s and rebuilt after fire, and Archie's Waeside, a Le Mars steakhouse open since 1949.
Rows three to seven come from the Foundation's published semifinalist lists. Iowa's record there is thinner than its neighbours' but real, and it has shifted west: Kevin Scharpf at Brazen Open Kitchen in Dubuque was the state's 2022 entrant, Cedar Rapids supplied Cobble Hill in 2025, and Des Moines now accounts for three of the five, with Simon's reaching the national Outstanding Hospitality list in 2025 and Masao and Oak Park both named in 2026.
Rows eight to ten are the Wikipedia-notable rung. The Webster and Tasty Tacos each state a dated distinction from a named body. Canteen Lunch in the Alley carries no award, and under the corrected ladder it does not need one — the Wikipedia article and an unbroken counter service since 1936 are the qualification.
What did not fit, and why. Hamburg Inn No. 2 in Iowa City clears the same rung as Canteen Lunch and is genuinely trading, but only one of the two fits and Canteen Lunch takes it: the Hamburg closed and reopened under new ownership in October 2023, while Ottumwa's counter has run continuously. The Local Crumb in Mount Vernon was an Outstanding Baker semifinalist in 2022, but it operates as a pre-order bread bakery rather than a place you sit down to eat, and no public trading hours could be confirmed. Two Iowa semifinalists are gone rather than crowded out: Rodina in Cedar Rapids, a 2023 semifinalist, has closed, and Clyde's Fine Diner in Des Moines, a 2024 semifinalist, closed in June 2025 when its owner declined to renew the lease.
The Lincoln Winebar in Mount Vernon was named to The New York Times list of the 22 best pizzerias in the United States in 2024, but its domain is now parked for sale and its operation could not be confirmed, so it is left off. Youngville Cafe near Watkins is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (2007) and reopened in 2022 after storm damage, but its current operation could not be confirmed either. Both belong on this page the moment they can be verified as open.
