Top Ten Restaurants in Alabama
4 of the 10 are pinned on the map above. Neither OpenStreetMap nor Wikidata carries a location for Automatic Seafood and Oysters, OvenBird, Bayonet, La Fête, Pizza Grace and Chez Fonfon, so they are listed below but not pinned — a missing pin is left missing rather than guessed at. Each row also links straight to its own location in Google Maps.
The MICHELIN Guide American South covers Alabama and published its inaugural selection in November 2025. No Alabama restaurant received a MICHELIN Star in that first selection, so this list leads with James Beard Foundation Award winners and then works down through Bib Gourmand and MICHELIN Selected.

Why these ten
Alabama took no star in the inaugural MICHELIN Guide American South, so the list opens on the second rung of the ladder: James Beard Foundation Award winners. Three of them are trading. The Bright Star in Bessemer, the oldest restaurant in the state, won America's Classics in 2010. Chris Hastings won Best Chef: South at Hot and Hot Fish Club in 2012, and Adam Evans won the same award at Automatic Seafood and Oysters in 2022. A national James Beard win outranks a Bib Gourmand and a MICHELIN Selected listing, so all three sit above the guide entries, ordered by the older award year.
Fifteen Alabama restaurants entered the guide — five Bib Gourmands and ten Selected — and they fill the remaining seven seats. Every MICHELIN distinction here carries the same 2025 year, so the older-award-first tie-break does nothing inside those rungs; the order runs by the oldest additional documented award, then alphabetically. That keeps Hastings' OvenBird at the head of the Bib Gourmands and puts Bottega ahead of Chez Fonfon on Pardis Stitt's 2025 MICHELIN Outstanding Service Award. OvenBird stays on the Bib rung rather than joining Hastings on the James Beard rung, because the 2012 award was won at Hot and Hot Fish Club; the chef credit stays in the cell where it belongs. Eleven of the fifteen guide entries are in Birmingham, which is why the table looks lopsided; Mobile contributes The Noble South, Alabama's only Bib Gourmand outside Birmingham.
Two omissions are worth naming. Helen in Birmingham holds a 2025 MICHELIN Selected listing and is the entry the three James Beard promotions pushed out of the ten. Highlands Bar and Grill, where Frank Stitt won Best Chef: Southeast in 2001 and which took Outstanding Restaurant in 2018, is the one James Beard winner left off on purpose: it is not in the MICHELIN selection and its dining room has not returned to regular service, so it stays off until a reopening is confirmed.
