Top Ten Restaurants in Indiana
7 of the 10 are pinned on the map above. Neither OpenStreetMap nor Wikidata carries a location for 9th Street Bistro, Lone Pine and Macizo, so they are listed below but not pinned — a missing pin is left missing rather than guessed at. Each row also links straight to its own location in Google Maps.
The MICHELIN Guide does not yet publish a selection covering Indiana, so this list leads with James Beard Foundation recognition. MICHELIN has announced an American Great Lakes edition that will include Indianapolis, but its first ceremony is scheduled for 2027 and no Indiana restaurant has been awarded anything yet.

Why these ten
Indiana is the state in this batch where the ladder produced more than ten qualifying entries, so the note below on what came off matters as much as the table.
Indiana has still never produced a James Beard Best Chef winner. The state sits in the Best Chef: Great Lakes region with Illinois, Michigan and Ohio, and every winner in that category since it was reorganised in 2022 has come from Chicago or Michigan. No Indiana restaurant has taken Outstanding Restaurant, Outstanding Chef or Best New Restaurant either. That leaves two America's Classics honorees at the top: St. Elmo Steak House, open in the Wholesale District since 1902, and Wagner's Village Inn, frying chicken in Oldenburg since 1968.
Rows three to nine come from the Foundation's published finalist and semifinalist lists, and they take every slot the ladder allows before the bottom rung is touched at all. Vida leads them on the strength of three separate semifinalist years, 2022 and 2024 under Thomas Melvin and 2026 under Jared May, which is the longest run any Indiana restaurant has put together. The 2026 class fills rows six to nine and is ordered alphabetically, there being nothing else to separate four restaurants first recognised in the same year: Lone Pine in Carmel, Macizo in Indianapolis, Red Yeti in Jeffersonville, and Tinker Street, whose Tom Main is the only Indiana name to reach a national category, Outstanding Restaurateur.
Row ten is the only Wikipedia-notable entry the ladder leaves room for, and it goes to the strongest distinction available on that rung. The Slippery Noodle Inn is a contributing property in an NRHP-listed district, a listing dated 1982, and describes itself as Indiana's oldest continuously operated bar in its original building.
What came off, and why. Kountry Kitchen Soul Food Place and The Workingman's Friend were both dropped. Each is a genuine Indianapolis institution carrying a dated distinction — a Food Network top-five soul food ranking in 2016 and a Thrillist best-burger-in-Indiana pick in 2015 — but a magazine or network list is the weakest rung on this ladder, and both were sitting above James Beard semifinalists that rank higher. The ladder fills strictly from the top down, so rung six cannot be used while rung five still has qualifying entries.
Also outranked rather than disqualified: six long-running institutions — Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor in Columbus (1900), Bonge's Tavern in Perkinsville (1934), the Nisbet Inn in Vanderburgh County (1912), Ivanhoe's in Upland (1965), Mug-n-Bun in Speedway (1960) and The Sherman in Batesville (dating to 1852) — each carry their own Wikipedia article and therefore now clear the bottom rung on their own, without needing a dated award. Indiana simply has more James Beard recognition than it has room for.
Two former candidates are off for good rather than crowded out. Beholder closed in March 2026 after eight years, and Bluebeard closed in December 2025 after eleven; both had been Indiana's most decorated semifinalists. When the American Great Lakes MICHELIN selection publishes in 2027, this page will need a full rebuild anyway.
