Why these ten

New Hampshire sits in no MICHELIN selection and competes for James Beard regional awards inside Best Chef: Northeast, a six-state region it shares with Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont. Recent winners in that category have gone to Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut, which makes Evan Hennessey's 2026 win at Stages the first New Hampshire address to top the region in years, and the clear leader here. Below Stages, the state's national standing rests on two America's Classics, Polly's in Sugar Hill from 2006 and the Puritan Backroom in Manchester from 2020.

Rows four through seven are where New Hampshire is stronger than its win column suggests. The Foundation publishes its semifinalist and finalist lists every year, and New Hampshire chefs turn up on them far more often than they take the region: Super Secret Ice Cream in Bethlehem has been a semifinalist three years running and became a national Outstanding Bakery finalist in 2026, and David Vargas of Vida Cantina in Portsmouth has been named four times, once in the national Outstanding Chef category. Finalists are placed above semifinalists here, and the older award year first inside each group. The last three rows are Wikipedia-notable institutions ordered by the year of the distinction cited against them.

The list would run longer if the state's restaurants had stayed open. Four recent New Hampshire semifinalists are gone: Chris Viaud closed Greenleaf in Milford in August 2025 and Pavilion in Wolfeboro that September, Lee Frank's Otis in Exeter closed in early 2026 after semifinalist nods in 2024 and 2025, and the Thompson House Eatery in Jackson closed in November 2024 and was sold as a private residence. Two further candidates were cut for being Maine businesses with New Hampshire outposts rather than New Hampshire restaurants: Weathervane Seafood, based in Kittery, and the Green Elephant, whose original location is in Portland.
