Products for stripping a self-tan that has gone wrong or faded unevenly. They work because of a specific property of DHA colouring: the colour is in the dead surface layer of skin, and nothing else. Remove that layer and the tan goes with it.

Why it can be removed at all

Dihydroxyacetone reacts with amino acids in the keratin of the stratum corneum, producing brown melanoidins. Those coloured polymers sit in dead cells only — nothing penetrates to living tissue.

So a tan remover is an exfoliant. Every method in the category is a way of accelerating the shedding that would happen naturally over five to seven days.

A UV tan cannot be removed this way, because melanin is produced by living melanocytes and distributed into cells that are still forming. Exfoliating a sun tan removes a little of the surface and the colour returns from below.

The cheapest method is one of the best: a long hot soak to soften the stratum corneum, then a firm exfoliating mitt. Commercial removers mostly add acids or enzymes to make that faster and to reach patches a mitt misses.

Using one

  • Soak first. Twenty minutes in a warm bath does most of the work by hydrating and loosening the surface layer.
  • Work in sections with a mitt or the product's applicator.
  • Expect it to be uneven. The darkest patches — knees, elbows, ankles, knuckles — took up the most DHA and will resist longest. Repeat rather than scrubbing harder.
  • Do not scrub raw. Aggressive removal on thin or already-irritated skin causes genuine abrasion, and a patchy tan is better than a grazed leg.
  • Moisturise thoroughly afterwards. You have just removed a layer of barrier.
  • Wait before re-tanning — at least 24 hours, and longer if the skin is at all sore.

Preventing the problem

Almost every tan-removal job traces back to preparation. Exfoliate 24 hours before tanning, shave or wax 24 hours before rather than after, moisturise the dry areas that grab colour, use a mitt, and moisturise daily afterwards so the fade is even rather than blotchy.

For anyone who has to remove a tan often, Gradual Tanning Lotion is the better product — low-concentration DHA makes mistakes almost invisible.

Where it sits in the rules

Cosmetic in the US — FDA primary category (15) suntan preparations, overlapping with (14) skin care preparations. No premarket approval.

Salicylic acid at 0.5–2% with an acne claim would engage the OTC acne monograph and make the product a drug; a plain exfoliating remover with appearance claims is a cosmetic. AHA-containing products carry FDA's recommended sunburn-alert labelling, and FDA's guidance on AHA cosmetics recommends a free acid concentration of 10% or less and a final pH of 3.5 or greater.

In the EU, glycolic and lactic acid for consumer use are restricted through Annex III with concentration and pH conditions, and stronger formulations are reserved for professional use.

Shelf life

12 months after opening. Acid formulations drift in pH over time, so an old remover may work less well — which tempts longer contact and harder scrubbing, the wrong response.

Enzyme removers are the least stable in the category, as proteases denature with heat and time, and a denatured enzyme is simply inert.
