A sprayed liquid, applied over bare skin or over makeup, at any point in the day. The mist is the least essential product in this catalogue and the one with the most persistent misconception attached: spraying water on the face does not hydrate it, and can leave it drier.
The evaporation problem
Water applied to the skin surface evaporates. As it goes it carries away some of the skin's own moisture with it, because evaporation from a wet surface accelerates transepidermal water loss. Plain water — including thermal spring water and rose water — sprayed on and left to dry is therefore a net negative for a dehydrated face.
The fix is in the formula. A mist with humectants holds some of that water at the surface, and a mist with a light occlusive or film former slows the evaporation. Both together make a mist that does what people assume all mists do.

What a mist is actually good for
- Comfort. Cooling on a hot face, on a flight, in an office, after sun. That is a real benefit and does not require the product to hydrate anything.
- Reactivating makeup. A mist over powder knocks back a flat, cakey finish.
- Damp-skin application. Misting before a serum or cream gives humectants water to bind, and is a genuine technique.
- Sensory relief on inflamed skin — post-procedure, sunburn, rosacea flush.
The aerosol question
Pump misters are unremarkable. Pressurised aerosol versions bring the US warning-statement requirement at 21 CFR 740.11 into play: self-pressurised cosmetic containers must carry a warning against puncturing or incinerating, storing above 120 °F, and use near flame, with additional wording for products packaged in flammable propellants and for those intended for use near the face.
Fine-particle sprays around the face also raise an inhalation question that is well understood in Hair Spray and Sunscreen Spray and applies equally here — hold at arm's length, eyes closed, and do not inhale the cloud.
Where it sits in the rules
Cosmetic only in the US, FDA primary category (14). No monograph. A mist claiming to protect against sunburn would be a drug, and one claiming to treat acne would be a drug; ordinary mists claim neither.
Fragrance is the ingredient worth checking, because a mist is applied to the face repeatedly and often over the eye area. In the EU, individually named fragrance allergens must appear in the ingredient list rather than inside "parfum", and the list of allergens requiring declaration was substantially expanded by Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 — so an EU-market bottle carries more information here than a US one.
Shelf life
Water, a spray mechanism, and a nozzle that touches nothing — the format is reasonably robust. Six to twelve months after opening. Sprays stored in cars and handbags are heat-cycled, which stresses the preservative system. Any cloudiness or odour change ends it.
