A spray, cream or serum applied before blow-drying, straightening or curling. It is the one styling product with a genuinely protective function rather than a cosmetic one, and the mechanism is worth knowing because it explains both what it does and what it cannot do.

What heat does to hair

  • Above roughly 150 °C the keratin begins to denature and the shaft weakens.
  • Water inside the shaft flashes to steam if heat is applied to wet or damp hair, blowing microscopic craters in the cuticle. This is bubble hair, and it is permanent damage done in seconds.
  • Melanin degrades, so heat-styled hair loses colour and looks brassier.
  • The cuticle lifts and chips, raising porosity and friction, which then causes tangling and breakage.

Straightening irons commonly reach 180–230 °C. Curling irons the same. A blow-dryer on high, held close, exceeds 100 °C at the hair surface.

How a protectant works

Three mechanisms, and no product achieves total protection:

Published testing generally shows a meaningful reduction in damage, not elimination — often described as roughly halving the measurable damage in controlled conditions. That is a large benefit and it is not immunity.

The rules that matter more than the product

  1. Never straighten wet or damp hair. Bubble hair happens here, and no protectant prevents it. Dry completely first.
  2. Lower the temperature. Most people use far more heat than their hair needs. Fine or damaged hair: 150 °C or below. Coarse or coily hair: up to 180–200 °C. The extra 30 degrees buys damage, not smoothness.
  3. One pass, moving steadily. Repeated passes over the same section is the most common cause of heat damage.
  4. Apply the protectant to damp hair, then dry, then style — a protectant sprayed onto dry hair immediately before an iron has no time to form an even film.
  5. Coat the ends most. They are the oldest and most damaged part.

Hair oils are not heat protectants. They have their own smoke points, they conduct heat, and there is no established protective effect. Argan oil under a 200 °C iron is frying, not shielding.

Where it sits in the rules

Cosmetic in the US — FDA primary category (06) hair preparations (non-coloring). No monograph applies, and — worth stating plainly — there is no regulatory standard for the phrase "heat protectant" in the US or the EU. Any product may use it. The only verification available to a buyer is the presence of the film formers and thermal polymers named above.

Aerosol versions carry the warning statement required at 21 CFR 740.11 for self-pressurised containers, including flammability wording — and a hair spray is briefly flammable on the hair, which matters with a hot iron.

In the EU, a leave-on product cannot use methylisothiazolinone, and preservatives come from the Annex V closed positive list.

Shelf life

12–24 months after opening. Silicone-based sprays are very stable. The practical failure is a clogged nozzle producing droplets rather than a mist, which leaves the hair unevenly protected — rinse the nozzle. Water-based sprays follow the ordinary 12-month rule.
