table

Type Description & Use Case
Fiber Optic High-speed, low-latency wired internet using light signals through glass fibers; urban/suburban areas.
Cable Broadband Internet over coaxial cable TV lines; widely available in cities and suburbs.
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) Internet over traditional copper phone lines; slower than fiber/cable, but available in many areas.
Satellite Internet Internet via geostationary or low-earth orbit satellites (e.g., Starlink, HughesNet); global coverage, including remote/rural areas.
Fixed Wireless High-speed internet delivered wirelessly from local towers to fixed antennas; common in rural areas.
Mobile Broadband (4G/5G) Internet via cellular networks; accessible anywhere with mobile coverage, using phones or hotspots.
Dial-Up Legacy technology using analog phone lines; extremely slow, rarely used except in remote areas.
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) Digital transmission over traditional phone lines; legacy, mostly replaced by DSL/fiber.
Wi-Fi (Wireless LAN) Local wireless access, typically via a router connected to another form of broadband.
Ethernet (Wired LAN) Local area network using cables; often used in offices, schools, and data centers for reliability.
Bluetooth Tethering Short-range wireless sharing of internet from a device to another (e.g., phone to laptop).
Powerline Networking Uses electrical wiring in a building to transmit internet signals; useful in homes with poor Wi-Fi.
Municipal/Public Wi-Fi City- or community-provided wireless internet, often in parks, libraries, or public spaces.
Mesh Networks Decentralized network of interconnected nodes; useful for large campuses or community networks.
Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) Internet via utility power lines; limited adoption due to interference and infrastructure challenges.
Private Leased Lines Dedicated, high-speed connections for businesses or institutions; very reliable and secure.
Satellite Phone/Data Specialized satellite networks for voice and low-speed data in remote areas (e.g., Iridium, Inmarsat).
